When you live on a street named, Norman Rockwell Lane you know you’re in for a real treat. Nestled in the Stonebridge subdivision of McKinney, you will find this quiet, little Mayberry Neighborhood. As you approach the drive, you can almost hear June calling Beaver home for dinner. This entire neighborhood takes you back in time when life was a little slower. And the home of Nancy and Jim Schwalls plays upon this old fashioned theme. The large wrap around front porch is loaded with pots of colorful flowers and other welcoming collectables. Nancy’s gardens are jam-packed with eclectic antiques and interesting treasures she has woven into the landscape. A vine covered arbor begs you to “sit a spell” and enjoy the Koi filled pond while marveling at the picturesque setting. Once you go in the house, it is a collectors dream. Nancy has gathered hundreds of treasures from the past, and if you do decide to “sit a spell” you might be taken back in time as well.

The Sweet Nectars Of Summer...

Here in McKinney, we all know it’s the start of the summer when the McKinney Garden Club hosts their biennial Home and Garden Tour.   This year’s tour promises to be better than ever.  The homes are beautiful and the gardens are truly spectacular.

The Home and Garden Tour will be held Saturday, June 7, from 10AM – 4 PM and will feature several homes and gardens located right here in McKinney.  This year all of the homes and gardens are very different styles. Included, are gardens that are whimsical, old fashioned, dramatic, educational, ponds, pools, historical, outdoor living areas, natural wildlife habitats, and romantic. The secret that binds them together is what they all offer; gorgeous homes and gardens.  “Ideas abound this year for gardening enthusiasts”, says Jan Johnson, one of the co-chairs of the tour.  Debbie Finley, the other co-chair said, “There is something this year for everyone’s taste and gardening ability.”  Jan and Debbie chaired the tour in 2006 as well, and both agree this is the best tour to date.  Tickets are $15 for the tour and can be purchased at Calloway’s, Shades of Green, and Little Red Hen starting May 1, and at every tour home the day of the tour. Tour information is available through the website:  www.mckinneygardenclub.org.

The McKinney Garden Club added a new twist for the tour in 2006, and continued with this tradition for the 2008 tour.  They invited the McKinney Art Club to submit original art work depicting gardens through the artist eyes.  25 original pieces of artwork were submitted and the Garden Club voted to make local artist, Carol William’s watercolor titled, “Morning Visit” the winner for the 2008 tour.  The Garden Club purchased the original and includes an image of the painting in all their promotional material.  The original is also raffled off on the day of the tour.  The price for a chance: $1.00.

Giving back to McKinney is what the Garden Club is all about.  Not only does the Garden Club reach out to the McKinney Art Club, but 100% of the proceeds from every tour returns to McKinney for beautification projects.  What happens in McKinney stays in McKinney, so the saying goes. Projects the Garden Club has funded in the past include: Katie’s Garden at the Heard Craig House, trees in various parks throughout the City of McKinney, benches at the McKinney Performing Art Center, the Chapel Garden, Gazebo Garden and landscaping for Wilmeth School at Chestnut Square, Holy Family School, Collin County Humane Society, and Crepe Myrtles for the Crepe Myrtle Trail. The president of the Garden Club, Marilynn Tolle said, “It’s such a joy to be driving around McKinney and see some of the projects that the Club has funded, they are all so beautiful”.

Beautification is what the McKinney Garden Club knows best, in fact, their mission since 1930 is to promote an interest in gardens and gardening and support environmental concerns in the community through the their resources.

Plan to attend this fabulous event, smell the sweet nectars of summer, pick up some great gardening and decorating ideas and support this fine organization in it’s goal to bring a little piece of heaven to McKinney.
